Here’s the quick and dirty:

(Richmond, Va.) ART 180′s Open Studio Series begins Tuesday, January 12 and continues until January 14, showcasing the talent and creativity of young people in challenging circumstances. Exhibitions will take place in three different locations and will include a selection of comics, mixed media tapestry, prints, music, creative writing, drumming, theater, photographs, sculpture, puppetry and a mural.

VCU Art Gallery to be Built at Belvidere and Broad

Proposed Design

Style Weekly reports about recent changes to VCU’s plans to build a student art gallery. A proposed site near the Jefferson Hotel was scuttled after opposition from the owners of the Jefferson (Booty Armstrong and William Goodwin Jr. ) who also just happened to donate the land (and who plan a future donation of adjacent land in 2011). Evidently and understandably they desire a more consistent (and perhaps less artsy) design plan for development near the Jefferson.

As for the gallery itself, Style offers this:

The desire for a new gallery is also driven, in part by the school’s rankings lust. The School of the Arts is the highest-ranking public art and design graduate program in the country and fourth overall behind Rhode Island School of Design, Yale University and the School Art Institute of Chicago, according to a 2008 ranking by U.S. News & World Report. In the past five years, those other programs have all built or renovated new galleries.

The Page Bond Gallery at 1625 W. Main Street debuts a new exhibit this Friday, May 1st. Gordon Stettinius offers a collection of street photographs, including some from Best Friends Day. Kazaan Viveiros offers paintings on panels that were inspired by a recent trip to Portugal.

These works by Gordon Stettinius and Kazaan Viveiros will be on view at the Page Bond Gallery, 1625 West Main Street, with an opening reception honoring the artists, Friday, May 1, 2009 from 7 to 9 PM. The exhibition will be on view at the gallery from Friday May 1 through May 30.

Fresh Ink Series at Visual Arts Center

Chapbook Poster

This Sunday is the second installment of the Fresh Ink literary series. The focus is on chapbooks.

Chapbook is a term currently used to denote low-cost hard copy production. Poetry chapbooks tend to focus on a specific theme, story, or form to unify the entire book. The genre has been revitalized in the past 20 years by the widespread availability of low-cost copy centers and the cultural revolutions spurred by both zines and poetry slams.

Some details: the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, the New Virginia Review, the Library or Virginia and Chop Suey Books continue the Fresh Ink literary series with a chapbook festival Sunday, April 19, from 1 to 5 at the Visual Arts Center. Doors open at 12:30 PM at 1812 W. Main Street. Various poets and writers will be reading selections from their work.
