The purpose of this project, as proposed by City Council, is to provide ornamental lights in the Fan District and remove the existing shoebox and cobra head street light fixtures. The project boundaries are from the Boulevard east to Harrison Street and from Main Street north to Broad Street (but not including any of these border streets). Construction is to occur in phases as funding is made available. This newsletter addresses portions of the lighting project that have received funding.
The existing fixtures use standard High Pressure Sodium Vapor (HPSV) lamps with low color rendering (yellow light). The new lamps will improve color rendition by providing the appearance of a warm whiter color. In addition, overhead street light wiring will be replaced with underground service wiring. A map of the project boundaries is attached.
The last phase of this project was completed in June 2012. The next phase of the project includes construction on West Grace Street from Davis Avenue to the Boulevard and also Mulberry Street from West Grace Street to Main Street. The contractor for this phase has been selected and will mobilize after Labor Day on West Grace Street from Davis Avenue to the Boulevard. While this section is under construction, DPU will finalize the construction drawings and secure a contractor for the upcoming sections on Mulberry Street from Grace Street to Main Street. Installation of lights on the 2700 and 2600 blocks of Floyd Avenue is also expected by the end of the 2014 calendar year. DPU intends to keep construction continuous as funding is made available.
