Proposal to close part of Floyd to cars at VCU
A recent email from the Fan District Association has information a proposal to close a portion of Floyd Avenue to cars:
[...] proposal to close Floyd Avenue between Harrison and Cherry to cars between 9am and 4pm on days when VCU is in session, creating a more pedestrian friendly area in the heart of the campus. Further, VCU’s intent is to be able to allow the parking in that area to be utilized, and how they would allow that is still to be determined.
If they were to implement this it would not be before calendar year 2014.
There is a survey for FDA members.
Just close it permanently except to delivery trucks.
Makes for a more contiguous/nice campus.
If you’re driving along floyd while school is in session, you’re asking to wait 15 minutes anyway… go to cary or franklin.
they need to close even more streets than this. At least during school days.
Fan District Association will consider a proposal to close off parts of Floyd to cars near #VCU – http://t.co/7fOa6nGakU

VCU has made a tentative proposal to close Floyd Avenue between N. Harrison Street and N. Cherry Street to… http://t.co/2QQhENs5gL
Stop closing streets – VCU has closed too many streets – this is a city for god’s sake. It is almost impossible to get around near campus with all of one way streets and streets that are no longer open to traffic. And then there is the medical campus, it’s gridlock down there. And they wanted to close 12th street for a garden when they already have a garden a block away. Stop closing streets!
I think that this would be great, as long as it stays open to bicycle traffic. This is indeed a city, and the grid gives cars many other options for going east/west right there (Broad, Grace, Franklin, Main, Cary).
Sounds good to me- more seasonal closings could imporve traffic in that area, not make it worse. And don’t worry people, they aren’t taking away your streets, its just a seasonal thing.
Oregon Hill needs to be able to go west on Idlewood before this is done. We need the Idlewood roundabout project.

Bicycle traffic is a hazard west of that area. Could Floyd also be a bicycle area to Boulevard? I live on Grove and Vine and live in fear of hitting one of those bike riders.
Kay,
There is a idea being studied called the Floyd Avenue Bicycle Boulevard (http://fanofthefan.com/tag/floyd-avenue-bike-boulevard-project/) which would make Floyd much more bicycle-centric from VCU to the Museum District.
