A MONUMENTAL CHALLENGE!
The variety and quality of public sculpture owned by the City of Richmond rank it among the best in America: from explorer Christopher Columbus at Byrd Park to dancer “Bojangles” Robinson in Jackson Ward to tennis pro Arthur Ashe in the Museum District and, of course, the generals who lost their war but still fascinate legions of visitors to Monument Avenue.
Save Our Statues seeks funding for its comprehensive, long-range plan to stabilize the 21 deteriorating statues on City property and assure their continued care. The City has cleaned Columbus thoroughly, for the first time since he was built in 1927, and Save Our Statues will work to provide the funding to maintain him. We envision a similar approach for all the City’s statues.
