James Branch Cabell Library, built in 1975 for an enrollment of 17,000 and a collection of 1 million volumes, is now overwhelmed by VCU’s 32,000 students and a research collection more than 2 million volumes. The new building will provide hundreds of much-needed seats in Learning Commons-style computer labs and flexible student workstations, classroom set ups, individual quiet study spaces and a state-of-the-art digital media studio, all centered around student work with online and print materials that are core resources for learning today. The projected cost is $47.5 million and details will be presented through the Virginia General Assembly’s budgeting process during the upcoming legislative session. If the General Assembly appropriates the funding, design will begin in July 2012, with an opening targeted for July 2015.
