Eton’s (1966)

In 1966, Eton’s was located at 938 West Grace Street, one block away from Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University). During the 1960’s, the bar was a popular spot for gay gatherings. However, Richmond Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University) officials banned students from patronizing in 1967. The Alcohol and Beverage Control Board brought up charges against Eton’s owner, William A. Rotella. The charges included serving beer to gays and minors and being a meeting place for homosexuals.

On Saturday, August 13, 2011, the Valentine Richmond History Center presents its third annual Lesbian and Gay History Bus Tour. Leading up to the event, will feature vintage photos from Beth Marshack’s “Lesbian & Gay Richmond” mirrored with images of the city today.
