Fan alley cleanup this Saturday

SPRING FAN ALLEY CLEANUP 9AM TO NOON, SATURDAY MARCH 19TH Join your Fan neighbors and FDA members this Saturday to tidy-up our wonderful Fan Alleys, the special public ways that link our homes and gardens. These are the walkways we want all to enjoy (and not avoid).

Volunteers are invited to assemble at Meadow Park at 9 AM to receive trash bags and plastic gloves, and then patrol as many alleys as they wish to remove the litter. Have fun ridding our alleys of bottles, cans, papers, plastic cups, old shoes, bags, and other detritus. You will be instructed as to where to dispose of the stuff.

This spring, we are fortunate to have the City Department of Public Works supply us with THREE GARBAGE TRUCKS with 3 drivers and 3 assistants to patrol targeted Fan alleys to pick up BULK items: old sofas, mattresses, tree limbs, broken tables and the like. Volunteers may help with the trucks (but not ride on them).

BASIC DPW RULES OF THE DAY ARE:

-All bulk items must be in the alleys by 8 AM Saturday

-Bulk items must not be piled beneath overhead wires (within reason)

-Bulk items must be in alleys and not in front of houses.

-NO BUILDING MATERIALS WILL BE COLLECTED: e.g., doors, plaster, brick, pipes, and storm windows.

-NO HAZARDOUS WASTE: e.g., anthrax powder, sulfuric acid, gasoline

NOTE: Appliances such as window AC units, refrigerators, and microwaves will be picked up FREE (usually a $25 pick-up fee), BUT for appliance pick-up, you must call DPW BEFORE Saturday and let them know the address of the items (e.g. behind 1802 Grove Ave.). CALL 646-8325.

Volunteers will be treated with a coupon for free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate at Rostov’s Saturday afternoon.
