Two questions:

How much does VCU contribute to the City's enforcement of graffiti and graffiti abatement considering the students who are arrested for graffiti?

Why doesn't VCU expel students who are arrested for graffiti?

I received a check today for partial payment of the $200 restitution that "panko" was ordered by the courts to pay for tagging my business.

I encourage everyone who gets tagged to file a report with the Richmond police, as there is always a chance the tagger will be caught, prosecuted and punished, and you'll be reimbursed for the time and costs to repair the damage they cause.

As a middle aged person myself, let me offer the perspective of someone like me that feels unsafe shopping in an area with graffiti all over the buildings. Graffiti is not art; it conjures up images of gangs and violence and a neighborhood that doesn't care about its image. A young person may see this as "art" but well-to-do consumers feel unsafe getting out of the car and walking down the sidewalk into my business.

The money that these consumers spend in your city goes towards the job the business provides and the upkeep of the building and property that we invest to make our place an attractive asset to the community. Not to mention that 20% of the sales taxes they spend go straight into the city of Richmond coffers.

We merchants rarely have to deal with graffiti and other acts of vandalism out in the suburbs, as I well know from owning businesses out there as well.

It's just not unreasonable to ask that graffiti "artists" put their talents to use in productive ways. I think when most of them (and their "fans") gain some maturity then they'll see the ripple effect of the damage they cause.

I'm looking forward to seeing them repair a wall near me. Maybe they could wear a goofy hat and ugly shirt that identifies their crime. I'd like to know just the class of character were dealing with.

Sure grafitti is art sometimes. Mostly its bad art, like most artists, 99% of grafitti is lousy.

But most importantly, you have no right to destroy other peoples property without their permission. My right to punch you stops where your nose begins.

Stop trashing communities and making the world a shittier place. Fine if you want to live in a toilet, but pretty nasty making others join you.

Maybe what is needed is real jail time. Pain helps with art, so being a prison girlfriend should really help these guys art.

Wow, where to begin. For starters, I'd just note that calling yourself "Lloyd" (even if that is your real name), is only slightly less anonymous than calling yourself FanGuy. In either case, no one knows who you are.

You don't have to be an artist to appreciate art. But this isn't about art, it's about property rights and respect for your neighbor's things.

The rest of your comment "Lloyd" is so rich with irony (for example, this little gem: "Calling people, good people such names as a coward. Well Fagguy your the only coward I’m seeing") that I really don't think it deserves more of a response, other than to say if it's not cowardice to paint on other people's property under the cover of night, come knock on my door and ask me to watch you as you tag my house, and you will see what happens.

Well Fanguy, his address is under public records so I guess it's a deal. Go draw all over there stuff. You refer to them as cowards however you hide behind the name Fanguy rather than using your real name. By the way incase you missed it my REAL name is Lloyd. Again this is not something he does on the regular it was a one time mistake. If you would really like to see his "art" he has drawn some pieces for my friends and I. I will be more than happy to take pictures and send them to you or I will be more than happy to meet with you in person so you can see his work 1st hand Mr. Coward. Also you can realize you are speaking blindly about something you know nothing about. Far as my opinion of Graffiti.... I don't think it's right to do and I don't support it however from time to time I am amazed of the peieces/tags I see and sometimes even if the drawing isn't that good the location can still be mind blowing. Mr. Portillo's actual art in his books are rather good and he does have a world of potential and this was just something different he tried and realized he will stick with the pens, pencils, and paper. What about you fanguy, do you really feel that strong about graffiti or has your life become that bland that for fun you search for things and gather little bits of bias information and state your opinions and call people names and lable them when in reality you know nothing about them. Well let me try to lable you.....hmmmmm ...... your probably a 30+ year old virgin who lives in their parents house (probably the basement)and has nothing good or exciting going for them so as a hobby this is what you do. Calling people, good people such names as a coward. Well Fagguy your the only coward I'm seeing. Pick something new to do....card games, video games, reading books, coin collecting, etc. etc. Hell maybe you should try graffiti. Who knows you may end up liking it much more than slaming strangers hidding behind your computer screen.

I have known Mr. Portillo for some years and I know he is a great guy and have always known him to keep his work in art books. I was shocked about this when I heard what he had done, however since then he has realized how stupid it was and does not have any intentions on doing anything like this again. Him and I both know you can't go back in time and change anything however he is human and we all make mistakes; some bigger than others. I know there has been an on going attempt to "clean" up the streets in Richmond and this certainly did not help, but Ricky has told me he is very sorry for what he has done and does ask for forgiveness and has contacted the owner or the builging he had painted on and has appologized to him as well. I just thought I should post this coming from someone who actually knows him because I don't want anyone to be under the impression he is a criminal or is part of the scum of society. He is a good person who just made bad mistake.

Thanks for you time,

Not Banksy-Posting on this blog during work hours at your high powered, high income job eh? Right, what a POGUE! Use your own alias you lazy poseur, not the graffiti artist's in the UK.

I'm thinking you are just a self entitled middle class VCU art student (or ex student hanging on in the FAN) who likes to tag posing as an urban property owner.

Busted, those names and the charges are a public record with the City of Richmond.

Joseph - "Not banksy" can be anyone who isn't BANKSY you dumbass. There is an artist in London who uses that name for his work, i was using it as an alias for commenting on this board.
I have owned several properties here in the FAN and am willing to bet I make more money than you. I really didn't want to get into a pissing contest with you guys about income, finances, etc., but that is all you and the others are focusing on here.

It's easy for you to think that graffiti artists are a bunch of poor kids and gangbangers, but the truth can be the exact opposite. Some of us own homes, make 6 figure incomes, have graduate degrees, work in government jobs, and drive nice cars. We just happen to love graffiti art and street art.

and yes, you can sandblast a historic or non-historic brick wall. Done correctly, it causes no damage to the brick. I know it's a hassle, but i've always viewed it as one of the circumstances of living in the FAN - same as the possums, the late night screaming, the bums, etc.

You're not even "Not Banksy" as a Google search reveals. Go back to the suburbs wannabe.

Macy, Not Banks and crew. There are many useless buildings in Chesterfield and Henrico that could use your special touch. Consider the possibilities. Share you art with the world.

It used to be graffiti was the realm of gang bangers. Now we have to deal with selfish bastards such as yourselves. If you want to be artistic, then do it on your own dime.
