RTD Profiles Garnett’s Cafe

Add this to the glowing reviews of Garnett’s Cafe at Meadow and Park. We wrote about it here when it first opened, but the good press keeps coming. . .

If your grandmother was hip, she’d hang out at Garnett’s Formica-topped bar, indulging in simple luncheonette pleasures. . . Garnett’s is a retro version of a sandwich lover’s dream. Forget the boring clubs and grilled-chicken sandwiches found at any other bar-type restaurant in town. This place pays homage to the eats of yore, offering its nostalgic menu in just as nostalgic environs.

Porsche Stolen from Fan

The RPD is reporting the armed theft of a Porsche Boxster last night around 9 PM from Harvie Street (between Main and Cary, near Gold’s Gym).

[Capt. Harvey] Powers said two males, one wielding a knife, confronted the car’s driver and took the car by force. The driver was not injured, Powers said.

Sidewalks and Roads Cleared?

IMG_1407

Hills and Heights has a post about making sure your sidewalks and cartops are clear of snow. The argument was raised by readers that sidewalks would be cleared by residents once roads were cleared by the city. I see their point…The road outside of my house is still snow (ice) covered, making me not very interested in going anywhere. Maybe I’m just being a wuss, but I don’t have any desire to fishtail into my neighbor’s parked car. My sidewalks are clear, but the same cannot be said of most of my neighbors’ walks – making walking difficult with a three year old. I’m just sayin’.

How do your roads/sidewalks look?

Just a couple pictures from the recent weather in RVA. Go ahead and upload yours to the fan district pool and we’ll post some more.

Car Towed? It’ll Cost You More

The RTD reports that the City Council voted to raise the fee for getting your car towed from $65 to $125. Judging by the number of tow trucks circling the Fan, this is bound to have an effect here.

The City Council voted 9-0 last night to raise the towing fee, which had been capped at $65 for the past 10 years. It also established that a violation of the city’s towing ordinance is a Class 1 misdemeanor, which carries penalties of up to 12 months in jail and $2,500 in fines.

Pay attention. Read the signs. Or don’t, at your own peril.

Graffiti Update

The much debated ‘offensive’ mural on the back of AlbTech has been replaced with this:

In related graffiti news, there has been an uptick in tags nearby in the Fan–along the Lombardy corridor. I can’t comment on the quality of graffiti, but some of these tags seem to offer a ironic self-referential commentary.

It appears to be the work of FHF, not quite as ubiqitous as BNE, but. . .

GRTC Site Sold to RRHA

Here’s the story from the RTD.

This has been rumored for awhile and comes as no surprise, but do please take careful note of exactly how this all went down. I’m sure others more aware of all of this will be blogging about this soon, but first the city stacked the GRTC board and then they took a vote when a third of the board wasn’t there. We’re all interested to see how the City manages the re-development of this site.

GRTC Transit System sold its coveted, century-old headquarters near Richmond’s Fan District today for more than $5 million.

The transit system’s board of directors voted 3-0 to approve the sale to Richmond Redevelopment & Housing Authority, despite the absence of two board members from Chesterfield County. The third Chesterfield representative, David Mathews, abstained from the vote, taken publicly after an hour-long executive session.

Strollers Stolen from Porches

The folks over in Byrd Park report that area crime includes stroller-theft. And the comments confirm what I’ve also heard–the thefts are common in the Fan, too. I’ve heard reports of stroller-snatching in the upper Fan along Floyd, but would imagine it’s a relatively frequent occurrence all over.

Lock up those strollers if you can’t bring them inside.

Man Found in Cold, Rain on Sunday Morning

The RTD has this piece about an unidentified man found on North Mulberry Street (between Main and Floyd) early Sunday morning. He had suffered a laceration to the back of his head (a possible sign of blunt force trauma), had lost a lot of blood, and was dangerously cold. The man was transported to VCU medical center and the police continue to investigate.

All Star Market Closing/Re-Sprouting

All-Star Market has posted this news on their website:

With some grief but mostly excitement, All Star Market and Deli will be closing its doors for good on December 21st, 2009.  We will uproot ourselves from our current location and move down the street to open a new place called Sprout.  Thanks for your support for the last three years, and come visit us soon!!

The new spot, according to the new Sprout website is across from Crossroads Coffee (at 1 N. Morris St.) and will open in January 2010 (in an increasingly crowded market what with Crossroads and Rev It Up nearby).

Sprout is one of the newest members of the localvore movement in Richmond Va, serving lunch and dinner seven days a week and offering to-go options, beer, wine, and quick-eats from our market.  Localvore is the diet of eating locally, and Sprout is committed to dealing direct, whenever possible, with the farmers, growers, tofu makers, artisans, etc. that provide the food we serve.  We plan to open in early January 2010 at 1N. Morris St. (close to VCU, and across from Crossroads Coffee Shop) and initially offer to-go sandwiches, soups, and items from our market.  Then in the spring we will open our dining rooms, bar, and patio!
