If you own a home or business in the Fan (or city for that matter) you recently paid (or owed) a storm-water run-off bill. If you wondered why you owed the city another $45 (+/-), here’s a spiffy PSA created by the DPU to explain:
The Firehouse Theatre will hold auditions for its new core Improvisation Company at the theatre, 1609 W. Broad St., on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m.
This company will perform shows scripted from original material and improvised rehearsal, similar to The Annoyance in Chicago. Strong improvisational skills are a must. Singing is a plus, but not required. Please bring a headshot and resume. Those auditioning will be asked to improvise in groups with given scenarios. If singing, bring sheet music in correct key. An accompanist will be provided. The core group will meet once a week beginning in February 2010, with a projected first show opening in September 2010. This is obviously a long-term commitment. Schedule will include midnight shows. Actors will be paid for performances only.

Richmond BizSense has the story of the new mural painted on a Fan business that has brought criticism and demands for removal. The mural–entitled Recession 2009 and painted by Hamilton Glass–features a man in a business suit with a revolver cocked at his temple. It is depicted on the back of ALB Tech–a computer repair and website design shop at 1208 W. Main St.
Nearby Miller House Bed and Breakfast has demanded the mural come down by December 1. Rather than escalate the confrontation, ALB Tech owner, Adam Bell, will concede.
“In my opinion they have threatened us but don’t have any legal right to [make us] bring it down, but Adam wants to stand in good graces with the neighborhood and that’s fine. I’m behind him 100 percent,” Glass said.

Schwarzchild’s Jewelry–a local jeweler founded in 1897–has unveiled the latest in its Richmond landmark ornament and charm series.
The charming row houses that line the streets of The Fan, one of Richmond’s most celebrated historic districts, have been rendered in sterling silver as the 2009 addition to Schwarzschild’s exclusive ornament series.
The handcrafted ornament (in sterling silver) costs $65. A charm (also in sterling) is $25. They are available at Schwarzchild locations in Cary Court, Alverser Plaza, and Short Pump.

Expect to see a bunch of runners in the Fan on Saturday morning–participating in the Richmond marathon, half-marathon, or 8K. The exact routes are here. The marathon races up W. Main Street and then north on the Boulevard, about 17 miles into the 26.2 mile course. At that point runners will need any support they can get. The marathon returns to the Fan from the Northside in the final miles crossing Broad Street on Lombardy Street before heading East down Grace Street.
The 8K races up (west) on Broad Street, before cutting across on Mulberry and then back down Grace Street.
Get out of your house tomorrow morning and cheer on these runners. They’ll need your support. Weather should (finally!) be dry, offering great conditions for the race. If you have to drive tomorrow morning, be prepared for street closures and detours.
