Mayor Wants City to Buy GRTC Property
Following up yesterday’s news about federal DOT money for the GRTC is this: Mayor Dwight Jones wants the City to buy the 7 acre Fan property that currently houses the GRTC.
Fan area councilman Charles Samuels weighs in:
Second District Councilman Charles R. Samuels, whose district includes the Fan, said whatever happens to the property will have a major influence on surrounding neighborhoods. He expects to work closely with Councilman E. Martin Jewell, whose adjoining 5th District includes the GRTC site.
“That’s a huge parcel of land, and there’s a lot of potential for what may come out of it,” Samuels said.
I don’t want to say that I don’t trust the City, but wouldn’t it be better and more efficient to leave this development to private interests?

I agree. Remember Sixth Street Marketplace.
No – The city would just sit on for many years and then sell it for pennies.. and/or Private interests can just build yet another apartment complex. What we want – we won’t get.
If the city gets a hold of this RHDA will head teh project and there will be low income housing built which will drive the surrounding property value down even further. I own a house on he 2700 block of Parkwood and the last thing i want to see is the city taking over this project. Anyone know what I can do to persuade the right people from letting this happen?
Please no!
If the city gets a hold of it, it will become a lame baseball stadium or maybe cheap housing. The city needs to spend their money on fixing our infrastructure and burring ugly powerlines.
