Acacia-Midtown Gets High Marks

acacia-signjpgHouse of Marinara posted a very strong review of Acacia Midtown. Since it’s one of my faves in Richmond, I guess I’m biased in linking to it, but so be it. The gist:

Overall- the place was a hit hr. I want need to make a point of going back there soon.

VCU’s Plans for Ukrops

ukropvcujpg

I couldn’t make it to the VCU presentation about their plans for the old Ukrops at Harrison and Grace. But here’s a great summary from Richmond BizSense.

The gist:

It will probably be another six to eight months before the university begins to make use of the property, according to [University spokesman] Ohlinger. “We need classrooms in the 60 to 80 seat range; the property provides space for about six of those. The second half of the store can be used for book storage, which would free up space in the library that they could use to convert to more technology use,” Ohlinger said. Ohlinger also said the university plans to make use of the parking lot once the current lease is terminated.

Happy Earth Day

Okay, so as a kid I remember mocking the obligatory Earth Day celebrations held at my school every April. But with all the recent attention on global climate change and with a maturing responsibility towards stewarding resources for the future, Earth Day makes sense.

In the Fan, you may not immediately think of Nature. But over the last week, one of the real natural treats of the Fan has become immediately apparent: the trees. Whether it’s the blooming dogwood or cherry trees or the high-arching elms, trees add a lot to the Fan.

One idea for Fan residents this Earth Day is to participate in the City’s Adopt-a-Tree program. For just $50 (tax-deductible, too), you can get a tree (a $250-$350 value) for in front of your house. The city does the work, you just need to commit to watering the tree once a week for the next 2 years. Applications are received between June and October; trees are planted between November and February.

For Earth Day, I’m  filling out the application and talking to my kids about how they get to water a tree for the next 2 years.

Here’s a pdf link with more details.

Bogarts Profile

RVAJazz has a nice feature on Bogarts at 1903 W. Cary St. Bogarts is now re-opened after an overnight fire about a month ago.

Established in 1970, Bogart’s has a rich history as one of Richmond’s favorite places to enjoy live music. Bogart’s has evolved from its early days as a weekend jazz club where coats and ties were required to a bustling Fan bar and restaurant where students and residents alike gather to enjoy a wide range of musical genres. Located at 1903 West Cary Street, the restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and offers take-out and catering services. There is live entertainment Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and off-street parking is available behind the residential buildings adjacent to the restaurant. More information about Bogart’s is available at www.bogartsinthefan.net.
